Mafia III Controller Not Working on Steam

Fix a controller that is missing, double-inputting, switching devices, or showing wrong prompts in Mafia III on Windows Steam and Steam Deck.

For Mafia III on Steam, begin with one controller, one input layer, and a clean launch. Disconnect extra pads and virtual devices, restart Steam, connect the preferred controller, and test the game’s default layout. If that fails, change the per-game Steam Input setting once and retest. Conflicting remappers, overlays, or two visible controllers cause many cases of no input, double input, or rapidly changing prompts.

The Steam listing declares full controller support, while Valve’s Deck notes still warn about non-Deck glyphs and external-controller selection. Detection and correct on-screen prompts are separate problems.

Identify the exact symptom

No input anywhere

Steam or Windows may not see the device, the wrong controller order may be active, or another program may have exclusive control.

Menus work, gameplay does not

A profile or device-switching state may be stuck. Test a clean configuration and load a fresh checkpoint.

Double input

Steam Input and a separate remapper may both expose the same physical pad. Disable one layer rather than remapping every button.

Wrong or blank prompts

The controller may work while the game displays keyboard, Xbox, or generic glyphs. Treat this as a presentation issue first.

Write down whether the issue exists in Steam’s controller test, Mafia III’s main menu, and live gameplay. That three-step result determines where to troubleshoot.

Establish a clean Windows Steam baseline

Close the game. Disconnect wheels, flight sticks, spare controllers, phone-control software, and unused wireless receivers. Exit DS4Windows, reWASD, JoyToKey, or similar tools for the first test. Restart Steam and use its controller test to confirm buttons and axes register once.

Launch Mafia III from the Steam library rather than directly from the executable. Use the official current files, no custom launcher parameters, and the default gamepad layout. Do not touch mouse or keyboard during the transition into gameplay; the game can switch prompt families when another device sends input.

If the controller works in Steam but not the game, open Mafia III’s per-game controller properties. Note the current Steam Input choice, switch it to the opposite supported mode, restart the game, and test. There is no universal enable-or-disable answer because Xbox-compatible pads and PlayStation pads may need different translation paths.

Test Steam Input and the overlay separately

An older official 2K support article recommends disabling the Steam overlay for device-switching problems. That advice is dated but still a useful isolated test. Disable the overlay for Mafia III, restart the game, and compare the same checkpoint.

Do not change Steam Input and overlay status at the same time. If both change, a successful result does not reveal which setting mattered. Record a small matrix: Input default/overlay on, Input changed/overlay on, then the working Input state/overlay off.

Restore the overlay if it made no difference, especially if you want Steam achievement notifications. Keep only the setting that produced a reproducible improvement.

Remove duplicate virtual devices

Double movement, two menu steps per press, or rapidly alternating glyphs usually means the game sees both a physical and emulated controller. Close third-party remappers and check Windows game-controller devices. Reboot after driver changes rather than repeatedly reconnecting mid-game.

For a DualSense or DualShock pad, choose either Steam Input translation or one external XInput emulation tool, not both. For an Xbox pad, start without external mapping. Wired USB is the clearest first test because it removes Bluetooth pairing and battery variables.

Do not delete driver packages or registry keys as an opening step. If the controller works in every other Steam game, keep the repair scoped to Mafia III’s per-game configuration.

Fix prompts without breaking working input

If movement and buttons work but prompts are blank or use a different controller family, do not rebuild the whole input stack. Verify files and reset to an official controller layout. Touching the mouse can temporarily switch icons, so move only the controller while checking.

Valve’s current Deck metadata says Mafia III may show mouse, keyboard, or non-Deck controller icons. That means mismatched glyphs can persist even while the layout functions. Use Steam’s layout view as the reliable button map.

Avoid replacing profile files from an unknown download. A cosmetic glyph fix can introduce a control profile from an older build and turn a readable inconvenience into lost input.

Steam Deck and external controllers

Start with Steam’s recommended compatibility tool and the official/default layout. Valve rates AppID 360430 Playable, not Verified, and notes that graphics setup, glyphs, text entry, or controller configuration may require attention.

For a Bluetooth or USB controller, open the Deck Quick Access controller menu and reorder it as the active first controller. Valve specifically notes that the game may not default to an external device. Test the built-in controls again before changing Proton versions.

If a community layout is needed, inspect every binding and save a personal copy. Change one control group at a time. A layout can solve missing keyboard actions without proving that all in-game prompts will change to the same glyph family.

Last-resort recovery order

Verify Mafia III’s installed files, reset the Steam layout, and rename—not delete—the local temporary input/profile folder while the game is closed so it can be regenerated. Preserve the save folder first because profile and save data live under the same AppID-related user tree.

Then test a fresh local Steam configuration before adding any remapper back. If the issue remains, record controller model, wired/Bluetooth connection, Steam Input state, overlay state, Windows version, and whether Steam’s test succeeds.

Do not combine a Proton change, profile deletion, overlay toggle, and layout replacement in one attempt. One-variable tests make a working fix repeatable.
