Mafia III: Definitive Edition does not present its entire campaign as one straight sequence. The opening and ending are tightly directed, but the middle asks Lincoln to dismantle six hostile districts in a flexible order. Inside each district, story conversations, racket damage objectives, boss confrontations, favors, and collectible errands can all appear at once. The mission log makes more sense when those activities are separated by function.

Use this hub when you need to know what advances the main narrative, why a racket boss has not appeared, or whether an associate job can wait. The pilot’s mission list maps the full campaign rhythm without turning every optional target into a required step.

Recognize the five kinds of mission marker

Directed story mission

A named job with a fixed objective chain, often started by Donovan or a major character. Finish its active prompt before expecting the open district state to change.

Racket damage target

A destructible operation, cash source, enforcer, or theft opportunity. It reduces an earn requirement but may be only one of several valid choices.

Racket or district finale

The confrontation unlocked after enough required work. Completing it changes control and usually creates a consequential assignment decision.

Favor or optional job

An associate's repeatable or side activity. It may improve earn or relationships, but it is not automatically the next story gate.

DLC chain

A separate narrative introduced by a contact after campaign progress. Its own markers and travel areas should be tracked independently.

The color and shape of an icon are useful, but the objective text is the final authority. Select one mission and read its current step. If the text names a damage total, work on the racket. If it tells you to meet a character, continuing to raid unrelated targets will not satisfy it.

Opening: follow the authored sequence

The prologue moves between Lincoln’s return, the federal-reserve robbery, and the betrayal that drives the rest of the story. This portion is intentionally linear. Explore enough to learn movement, driving, combat, and interaction prompts, but do not search for the later district-management loop before it has been introduced.

After Lincoln recovers, Donovan becomes the intelligence anchor and the campaign establishes the first local footholds. Cassandra in Delray Hollow, Burke in Pointe Verdun, and Vito in River Row must be brought into the coalition through their related mission arcs. These recruitment chapters teach rackets and territory while giving each underboss a home district.

If no new coalition objective appears, complete the currently selected meeting or return to Donovan’s motel board. A half-finished conversation can look like an empty map if the player immediately fast-travels away.

Middle campaign: repeat the district ladder

The six expansion districts—Downtown, Tickfaw Harbor, Barclay Mills, Frisco Fields, Southdowns, and the French Ward—form the flexible middle. Each contains two rackets. Damage both operations enough to reveal and confront their bosses, then complete the district’s lieutenant arc. A sitdown follows territory capture.

Not every red marker is required. Rackets expose more damage opportunities than the threshold demands, allowing stealth, theft, destruction, or direct elimination approaches. Watch the numeric requirement in the objectives screen. Once it reaches the trigger state, stop clearing redundant targets unless you want their cash or experience.

District order changes pacing and access to underboss benefits, but the broad ladder remains stable:

  1. Establish the local contact and reveal both rackets.
  2. Collect intel through informants or wiretaps when needed.
  3. Meet each racket’s damage requirement.
  4. Confront its boss and decide the operation’s control.
  5. Finish the lieutenant’s story mission.
  6. Assign the captured district at the sitdown.

Diagnose a mission that appears stuck

First, make sure the objective is selected. Some map filters hide relevant icons, and a DLC or favor can remain selected after you return to the base campaign. Reopen the log, select the desired chain, and wait for the map to refresh.

Second, inspect the damage counter. A destroyed truck or stolen stash may not count until the action is complete and Lincoln leaves combat. Conversely, the counter may already be satisfied while an optional target remains visible. Look for the confrontation objective rather than assuming the last icon is compulsory.

Third, check prerequisite conversations. Donovan, the district contact, and underbosses often provide the next state. Enter the marked room, let dialogue finish, and avoid skipping away while the autosave indicator is active.

Finally, verify the current build and game files if a scripted prompt genuinely fails. The official October 8, 2026 Steam update lists mission-progression fixes. Old reports may describe bugs that were patched, while a save created on a much earlier build may still need a prior checkpoint.

Plan missions around cash, ammunition, and exits

Before a directed assault, bank carried cash and call the arms dealer. Restock the weapon types you actually carry; owning ammunition for a stored gun does not help the current loadout. Armor is most valuable when a mission constrains escape routes or guarantees a loud phase.

For open racket work, combine nearby tasks. Wiretap the junction box, collect an exposed item, then attack the damage target while already in the neighborhood. Park toward a wide exit road. After the objective updates, disengage instead of fighting endless reinforcements that add no campaign value.

The mission may impose a vehicle, disguise, tailing distance, or “do not alert” condition. Read the prompt each time it changes. General free-roam tactics cannot override a scripted rule.

Separate favors from story gates

Underboss favors and trafficking-style activities can increase racket earn, but they are not always prerequisites for the next district. When a favor repeats, check whether the current earn has reached its cap. Repeating supply runs beyond the useful state is busywork, not hidden story progress.

Optional character missions remain worthwhile for context and rewards. The key is to choose them deliberately. If you are pursuing the main narrative, pin the story objective. If you are strengthening one underboss before a sitdown, pin the relevant favor and confirm what benefit it improves.

Fit the three expansions into the timeline

Faster, Baby!, Stones Unturned, and Sign of the Times unlock through the base campaign rather than replacing it. Their contacts and destinations create clear separate threads. Complete the current base-game objective, bank cash, and create a manual save before entering an expansion chapter.

Faster, Baby! emphasizes driving and Sinclair Parish. Stones Unturned follows Donovan into a military conspiracy. Sign of the Times investigates the Ensanglante cult and later opens restoration work at Sammy’s bar. These arcs can be played when they appear, but alternating them between districts usually provides cleaner save state than abandoning a racket halfway through.

Mission-order habits that prevent confusion

  • Keep one active chain selected and read every updated verb.
  • Treat the displayed damage threshold as the racket’s completion test.
  • Finish dialogue and wait for the autosave indicator before switching activities.
  • Use the map legend and filters when a marker seems missing.
  • Save before district assignments and before starting a DLC chapter.
  • Check official update notes before following an old bug workaround.

The campaign is broad, not random. Once every marker is classified as story, racket, finale, favor, or DLC, the intended next action is usually visible.
