Mafia III uses “side mission” for several different activities: personal favors for Cassandra, Vito, and Burke; repeatable trafficking jobs that increase racket earn; vehicle races; story-DLC activities; and post-DLC businesses such as Herbalism and Sammy’s renovation. The best order depends on whether you want character scenes, underboss loyalty, money, a specific perk, or all 85 Steam achievements.
Open the journal before following a map icon. It identifies the giver and objective, which matters because some chains pause until you assign that underboss another district.
Know which optional activity you accepted
Underboss favors
Personal chains for Cassandra, Vito, and Burke. They reveal character history and advance relationship-focused achievements.
Trafficking jobs
Repeatable work for Emmanuel, Alma, and Nicki. Delivering the requested cargo raises the earn of rackets controlled by their underboss.
City activities
Races and vehicle customization support driving progression without changing the main revenge plot.
DLC operations
Herbalism, bounty targets, and Sammy's renovation unlock from specific story expansions and have their own systems.
An icon disappearing is not always a bug. Favor chains are gated by campaign progress and territory awards. If the journal has no next step, take over another district, make the sit-down decision, and speak to the underboss again.
Complete personal favors before neglect becomes a problem
Cassandra’s chain is associated with Emmanuel, Vito’s with Alma, and Burke’s with Nicki, but the personal chapters and trafficking loops serve different purposes. Personal favors add story, improve the relationship, and are required by achievements such as Family when their conditions are met.
Talk to each underboss after major territory assignments. Dialogue often signals whether they are satisfied before a betrayal becomes unavoidable. A balanced first run should award each of the three at least one of the six contested districts and avoid taking both rackets away from a lieutenant at the same sit-down.
Do not leave every favor until the final district. Some stages open only after the relevant underboss receives more territory, and a character who has already rebelled cannot offer the rest of their chain. Keep a save before each sit-down if the relationship achievements matter.
Use trafficking missions to raise earn
Emmanuel’s deliveries support Cassandra, Alma’s work supports Vito, and Nicki’s moonshine route supports Burke. These missions send Lincoln to secure vehicles or cargo and return them to the lieutenant. Completing the available work raises the associated racket toward its earn cap.
Higher earn improves the underboss’s total position, unlocks associate services and perks at milestones, and increases kickback. The exact dollar return depends on who owns the rackets and which deliveries are complete, so read the current earn display instead of relying on a universal farming number.
Trafficking jobs can repeat after another racket is assigned to that underboss. If the giver seems to offer the same style of objective again, check whether a newly acquired operation still needs its capacity raised. This is useful work to combine with collectible sweeps because the routes often cross multiple districts.
Fit racing and vehicle work between districts
New Bordeaux Racing adds class-based events and unlocks tied to driving. Bring an upgraded car suited to the class rather than assuming the fastest free-roam vehicle will qualify or handle well on every course.
Run a race when you need a change from racket compounds, not when a fragile story trigger is waiting nearby. Finish the current campaign conversation, let the autosave complete, then enter the event. Vehicle customization spends cash, so prioritize handling and durability for the races you actually intend to win.
Races are repeatable and can provide money, but they are not the only or necessarily fastest income method. Regular racket kickback is passive once established, and the Faster, Baby! grow house becomes a stronger late-game business when upgraded.
Separate the three DLC systems
Completing the Faster, Baby! story opens Herbalism at Laveau’s compound. Growing a crop is a background cycle: choose a strain, plant, wait while doing other missions, harvest, and sell where demand is favorable. It should accompany campaign play rather than replace it with idle waiting.
Stones Unturned adds a focused story with Donovan and later bounty-style work. Its military equipment and vehicle rewards are distinct from underboss favors; finishing it does not advance Cassandra, Vito, or Burke’s relationship chains.
Sign of the Times leads into Sammy’s renovation. The bar restoration is a spending project with its own missions for Aunt Lily, including gates that appear after certain improvements. Save it until your racket income or Herbalism profits can support the purchases without starving ammunition and armor.
Diagnose a side mission that will not advance
First, confirm that the current objective is selected in the journal. Some repeatable routes display several pickup zones, and returning the wrong vehicle does not satisfy the active delivery. Park within the marked area, leave the vehicle when instructed, and wait for the completion message.
If the giver has no prompt, finish any incomplete district assignment and return after the sit-down. If an interior is locked, check whether the location belongs to a story mission that has not opened. For a marker that remains after the action, move away, allow an autosave, and reload the nearest checkpoint.
The October 8, 2026 Steam update fixed several progression and NPC issues. Verify that Steam has updated AppID 360430 before applying old advice that replaces executables or downgrades depots. Preserve a manual save, verify files, and replay the clean approach to the trigger first.
A good first-playthrough priority
Do one available personal favor for each underboss before heavily favoring anyone. Run trafficking when an important perk or service is close to unlocking. Add races only if their upgrades serve your preferred car, and begin DLC stories after the full trio of underbosses is established.
This order keeps the map readable and relationships recoverable. It also turns waiting systems into background progress: start an Herbalism crop, complete a favor or collectible district, collect kickback, then return to harvest.
