Mafia III Herbalism Guide

Run the Faster, Baby! Herbalism business: unlock the grow house, rank up, hybridize strains, choose upgrades, read demand, and sell crops.

Herbalism unlocks after completing the Faster, Baby! story. Speak with M.J. at the grow house in Laveau’s compound, plant the starter crop, and use each harvest to increase Herbalism rank. Higher ranks open new base strains, lab hybridization, and grow-house upgrades. The profitable loop is to grow while completing other missions, then sell where the current demand screen shows the strongest return.

The system belongs to DLC AppID 598020 within the Definitive Edition package. It is not available at the first Sinclair Parish marker and will not open before the DLC story concludes.

Run one complete crop cycle

Choose a strain

Start with an available base or custom strain. Compare yield, growth, durability, and market traits rather than only one headline stat.

Plant and leave

Growth continues while Lincoln plays. Start a crop before district missions, races, collectibles, or DLC cleanup.

Harvest at maturity

Return when the map or grow-house menu shows the crop is ready. Fertilizer upgrades can change the practical harvest point.

Sell by displayed return

Demand changes across New Bordeaux. Compare the final money shown for each district instead of following a permanent favorite.

Early crops primarily advance the operation. Do not judge the final money potential from Ditch Weed and an unupgraded room. Rank and infrastructure are the path to better strains and larger sales.

Rank up and collect base strains

M.J. introduces new strain objectives as Herbalism rank increases. Follow the marked sample location, recover the plant material, and return it to the lab. The commonly documented base progression includes Ditch Weed, Ruderalis, Indica, and Sativa, each with different starting qualities.

The correct early choice depends on what blocks you. A faster strain supports more frequent cycles; a higher-value strain can earn more per harvest but may take longer and be more fragile. If you play long campaign sessions, slower growth is less painful because other missions fill the time.

Use the rank bar, next unlock, and actual sale screen as your progress indicators. A forum’s claimed number may assume a fully upgraded grow house and a particular demand roll.

Create custom hybrids without wasting generations

The lab becomes available after the early ranks. Hybridization combines a strain with a seed that changes traits such as growth rate, potency, resilience, flavor, or yield. After a custom crop has been grown, that hybrid can be used as the parent for another improvement.

Name generations clearly—such as “Fast R1” and “Fast R2”—so you do not plant the wrong branch. Improve the weakness that matters to your schedule first. Faster growth is valuable for short sessions, while yield and value matter more if you return only after long mission blocks.

Do not assume every stat must be maximized before selling. A balanced strain that matures during normal play can outperform a theoretical maximum that leaves the grow house idle while you wait.

Buy upgrades in bottleneck order

Grow-house upgrades expand capacity and improve the cultivation loop. Fertilizer affects how early a crop can be harvested, while other improvements support quality, yield, and operation growth. The full system documents seventeen upgrades across its progression, but they do not all become available at once.

If the room sits empty because one plant takes too long, growth and fertilizer are the priority. If crops finish while you are still busy elsewhere, invest in yield or market qualities. If a high-value plant is too fragile for the desired combination, strengthen it before stacking more profit traits.

Keep a cash reserve. The operation requires investment before it becomes a major income source, and Lincoln still needs ammunition, armor, and vehicle access during that climb.

Read market demand correctly

The sale menu displays how each district values the current crop. Choose by the final listed return, not by a remembered percentage or a district that paid well last time. Demand can change after sales.

Flavor and other strain traits interact with the market. Maintain more than one useful custom line if you want flexibility, but avoid creating a confusing library of nearly identical names. A fast dependable crop and a slower high-value crop cover most schedules.

After selling, begin the next planting before leaving the compound. An empty grow room produces nothing while Lincoln drives across the city.

Earn the Herbalism achievements

The DLC’s Herbalism achievements reward progressing the operation and selling a valuable crop. That Good Connect is tied to a high-value sale, while Herbalist and Mr. Green Thumb cover deeper system completion and upgrades.

Use the current Steam achievement descriptions as the final condition reference; trophy guides may show platform-specific values or wording. Keep a save before the qualifying sale and let the autosave and Steam notification complete before planting again.

If an achievement remains locked on the October 2026 build, perform a fresh qualifying action after updating rather than importing a completed save. Preserve the crop state, exit normally, and verify files before repeating the long growth cycle.

Fix a grow house that appears stuck

If Herbalism has not unlocked, finish the Faster, Baby! narrative and return to M.J. at Laveau’s compound. If a sample marker is missing, select the Herbalism objective in the journal and leave the compound before reopening the map.

For a crop that does not mature, check whether it was actually planted and whether the menu shows a progress percentage. Complete another mission or allow game time to advance; repeatedly reloading the same checkpoint may restore the same growth state.

When sale income disappoints, separate rank, upgrades, traits, and demand. Change one of those variables for the next crop. Avoid old exploits or modified saves until the official system has been tested cleanly.
