Mafia III Endings Guide

Understand Mafia III's three final choices, surviving-underboss outcomes, free-roam return, and the safest way to view every ending from one save.

Full ending spoilers begin here. Finish the final confrontation with Sal Marcano before reading if you want Lincoln’s decision and the underboss epilogues to remain unspoiled.

Mafia III ends with one major choice: leave New Bordeaux or stay and rule. Staying creates a second decision between ruling with the surviving underbosses and ruling alone. The choice changes Lincoln’s fate and the documentary epilogue, but the game returns you to a pre-choice checkpoint afterward, so one completed campaign can view all available endings.

Make a safe finale checkpoint

After dealing with Sal and Giorgi Marcano, follow the story through Father James’s church. When control returns and the final options are presented, let the autosave finish. Exit normally and copy your local save folder if you want an independent backup.

Your underboss history is already settled by this point. Cassandra, Vito, and Burke can appear only if they survived the campaign. The final menu does not restore an underboss who previously turned against Lincoln, so district assignments still shape the available cast and the “leave” successor.

Leave New Bordeaux

Drive out of the city. Lincoln walks away, and the strongest surviving underboss becomes the successor described by the epilogue.

Rule together

Return to the plantation and choose to keep the surviving lieutenants. Lincoln remains boss with his coalition intact.

Rule alone

At the plantation, choose to eliminate the underbosses. Lincoln takes sole control, but Father James answers that decision.

Leave and let an underboss inherit the city

Choose Leave New Bordeaux, get into a car, and drive toward the marked city exit. Lincoln follows the plan he discussed before the revenge campaign consumed him. His later life is described through the documentary interviews rather than continued free-roam play.

The successor depends on which underbosses remain and who holds the strongest position. Their epilogues are deliberately different: Vito’s rule, Cassandra’s rule, and Burke’s rule do not lead New Bordeaux to the same future. If you are targeting a particular successor scene, plan district allocation well before the finale and keep that character alive.

This ending does not erase your completed save. After the credits and final documentary material, the game can place you back before the choice so you may select another route. Wait through the transition instead of quitting during the credits.

Stay and rule with the surviving underbosses

Choose to stay, return to the plantation where sit-downs were held, and select the rule-together response. Lincoln keeps Cassandra, Vito, and Burke beside him if they all survived. If only some remain, the scene and narration use that smaller coalition.

This is the ending most directly connected to an even district strategy. Giving each underboss additional territory, completing their favor chains, and avoiding repeated reversals at sit-downs makes it easier to reach the finale with all three alive. Exact hidden loyalty thresholds are not displayed, so consistent treatment is safer than trying to repair a badly neglected relationship at the last district.

Rule together is not a secret “perfect” ending with a mechanical reward. It is a narrative choice about what Lincoln builds after revenge. Pick it because that outcome fits your campaign, not because an old forum post labels it the only correct option.

Stay, remove the underbosses, and rule alone

At the plantation meeting, the alternate response tells Lincoln to kill his remaining underbosses. Afterward, enter the car outside. Father James has planted the bomb, and Lincoln dies in the explosion. The documentary closes on the consequences of a ruler who discarded every ally.

This route is available even if the campaign already reduced the number of lieutenants at the table. It does not require a separate “evil” playthrough. The final response is the decisive trigger, though prior deaths change who is present.

Do not confuse this ending with the achievement path that keeps only one underboss alive. Achievement conditions tied to territory and loyalty are evaluated through campaign decisions; pressing rule alone at the end is not a shortcut for all of them.

View every ending without replaying the campaign

Complete one ending fully, including its credits transition, and accept the return to the pre-choice state. Revisit the church or decision marker, choose the next branch, and repeat. A manual backup adds protection if Steam Cloud syncs at an inconvenient moment, but ordinary ending viewing is designed around the checkpoint return.

Use this order if you want the least repetition:

  1. Leave New Bordeaux and watch the successor-specific epilogue.
  2. Reload the final checkpoint, stay, and rule together.
  3. Reload once more, stay, and rule alone.

If you want all three successor variations for leaving, that does require earlier saves or new campaigns with different underboss outcomes. The post-finale checkpoint cannot rewrite who survived or redistribute districts.

What continues after the credits

The return state is positioned before Lincoln’s final choice, allowing you to keep exploring the city and finish optional activity. Treat it as a playable checkpoint rather than a new canon chapter after the selected ending.

Collectibles, remaining favors, races, and DLC can still be handled from a suitable late-game save. However, a betrayed or dead underboss and their unavailable services are not restored simply because you watched another ending. Preserve a pre-betrayal save if you want to explore a different district plan.

The final choice itself awards the story-completion achievement when its conditions are met. It does not grant separate Steam achievements for all three cinematic branches, so players interested only in the Steam list do not need to repeat every ending.
