Every contested district in Mafia III is built around two rackets. Lincoln identifies the businesses, removes enough of their earn, confronts each racket boss, and only then goes after the district lieutenant. The most important preparation is wiretapping the sector that contains the boss: with the necessary intelligence, most racket bosses can be recruited; without it, the confrontation may offer only the kill option.
Recruiting and killing lead to opposing cumulative achievements, so decide which behavior belongs to the current playthrough before the first optional boss choice.
Expose the boss by damaging the business
Meet the local contact and investigate the two racket leads. The map will populate with enforcers, cash, contraband, vehicles, and other targets. Each action removes a displayed dollar amount from the racket’s earn.
You do not need to clear every icon. Open the journal, read the remaining damage requirement, and choose targets that cover it. Killing an enforcer, stealing a marked stash, destroying valuable stock, or interrogating an informant may finish the total faster than wiping another entire building.
Intel first
Interrogate an informant and wiretap the useful junction box. This exposes map details and preserves the recruitment option.
Damage efficiently
Compare each marker's value with the amount still required. Stop when the journal tells you to return for the boss.
Prepare the approach
Bank carried cash, refill ammunition and armor, and choose stealth or a controlled loud entry before crossing the compound.
Confirm the outcome
Watch for the kill or recruit prompt, let the autosave complete, and verify that the racket is ready for assignment.
Wiretap the correct junction-box sector
Collect three TL-49 fuses, locate the junction box covering the boss’s part of the district, and complete the lock-breaking interaction. A tapped box reveals collectibles and useful sites inside its area, but its mission value is the intelligence Lincoln can use at the confrontation.
Do not assume that tapping any box in the district covers both rackets. Look at the boundaries on the map and confirm the boss location falls inside the tapped region. If the recruit prompt is missing, a neighboring untapped sector is the first thing to check before calling the save broken.
Some story targets are not recruitable by design. The narrative makes those confrontations distinct. For ordinary racket leadership, however, same-game guides and the official system description consistently tie recruitment to gathered intelligence.
Recruit or kill based on the run you planned
Recruiting a racket boss keeps that person working under the organization and adds value to the operation when it is assigned. It also advances The New Boss, whose Steam condition centers on flipping the available bosses.
Killing advances the opposing No Loose Ends route. One campaign cannot honestly make both choices for the same boss. A reliable achievement plan dedicates one run to recruiting and another to killing rather than using a collection of unverified save swaps.
For a first story playthrough, recruitment is often the more forgiving economic choice, provided the sector was wiretapped. For an achievement cleanup run, consistency matters more than the small income difference. Write down the choice after each confrontation and keep a backup before the boss room.
Enter the boss site without losing the objective
Scout the perimeter and mark enemies. A whistle can separate guards, but bodies discovered near the route may trigger the whole compound. Disable or avoid callers before starting a loud attack, and keep a vehicle exit in mind if police attention joins the fight.
Once the damage threshold is complete, the racket boss is the objective; remaining generic enemies and cash are optional. Do not leave the area during the confrontation prompt. Make the choice, wait for dialogue and the save indicator, then check the journal.
If Lincoln dies after making the decision but before a clean save, reload and confirm the boss state rather than assuming it was recorded. The October 2026 update improved several progression cases, yet careful checkpoint handling remains worthwhile.
Assign rackets with the district sit-down in mind
Lincoln assigns each captured racket immediately, but the whole district is awarded later. Giving both rackets to the underboss who will receive the district avoids taking operations away at the sit-down. Reassigning them can lower the previous holder’s loyalty even though the district decision is final.
Racket ownership also connects to trafficking work and earn. After the sit-down, visit the relevant lieutenant—Emmanuel for Cassandra, Alma for Vito, or Nicki for Burke—to raise operations that are below their cap.
The recruit-or-kill choice and the district recipient are separate decisions. Recruiting a boss does not force a particular underboss assignment, and killing one does not prevent the captured racket from generating income.
Fix a missing confrontation or recruit prompt
If the boss marker does not appear, return to the contact and inspect the journal. A damage target may still be short even when the obvious compounds are clear. Search for a remaining enforcer, stash, truck, or informant with enough value to complete it.
If the boss is present but only the lethal choice appears, verify the exact sector’s junction box was tapped before the approach. Reload a pre-confrontation save after tapping it; intelligence obtained after the boss is already resolved cannot rewrite that outcome.
For a stalled objective on Steam, update the game, verify installed files, remove conflicting modifications, and replay from the nearest checkpoint before the trigger. The official October 8, 2026 notes mention mission and checkpoint progression fixes. Avoid old depot downgrades until the current path has been tested on a backup.
