Mafia III: Definitive Edition is easiest to understand as two games braided together. One is Lincoln Clay’s directed revenge story, with authored missions and set pieces. The other is the repeating campaign loop of wiretapping, damaging rackets, recruiting racket bosses, confronting lieutenants, and assigning captured territory. Good guidance has to say which kind of activity you are entering, because advice for a story checkpoint can be actively unhelpful during an open district sweep.
This hub is the starting point for the Steam release with AppID 360430. It covers decisions that players actually have to make without pretending that every icon must be cleared or that one weapon solves every encounter. The pilot navigation links to the complete beginner route; the other summaries below explain how the planned mission, district, collectible, equipment, DLC, achievement, technical, and update sections fit together.
Pick the right route for your current problem
Starting or returning
Use the beginner guide to configure assists, learn intel tools, fund useful associates, and avoid early campaign habits that create unnecessary grind.
Lost in the campaign
Open Missions when an objective marker is unclear or when you need to separate mandatory story jobs from racket damage and optional favors.
About to assign territory
Read Districts before speaking at a sitdown. The money, favors, perks, and loyalty consequences extend beyond the building you just captured.
Cleaning the map
Collectibles organizes Playboy magazines, Vargas paintings, album covers, propaganda, Hot Rod issues, and Repent magazines by set and district.
The central rule is to diagnose the blocker before opening a walkthrough. A locked junction box asks for a technical resource, not better aim. A racket that still shows remaining damage needs another target, not a story mission. A lieutenant with no marker may require earlier objectives or a return to Donovan’s evidence board. Naming the state saves more time than driving to every nearby icon.
Understand the campaign rhythm
After the opening establishes Lincoln’s return to New Bordeaux, the campaign gradually hands you the tools needed to dismantle Marcano’s organization. In an active district, interrogations and wiretaps reveal targets. Destroying supplies, stealing cash, eliminating enforcers, and completing related jobs reduces a racket’s earn until its boss becomes vulnerable. Taking both rackets leads toward the district’s lieutenant and, eventually, a territory assignment.
Do not confuse damage with permanent completion. A red value remaining on a racket means the threshold has not been met. Money lying inside an enemy site is also not automatically added to the bank; carried cash can be lost on death, while banked cash is safe. These small distinctions explain many apparent progression problems.
The story also pauses this open loop for named missions. When that happens, follow the mission log and its explicit objective before trying to force a nearby racket. The planned Missions hub is organized around that distinction, so its list can tell you what advances the narrative and what merely weakens local operations.
Build a reliable New Bordeaux routine
Start a district visit by checking the map and speaking to the contact who supplies local targets. Secure junction boxes when practical, but do not treat every fuse and wiretap as compulsory. The main value is intelligence: nearby collectibles and hostile opportunities become easier to locate. If a junction box is in a dangerous compound, clear it as part of another objective instead of making a separate trip.
Before entering a marked site, call the arms dealer if ammunition, armor, or a suppressed weapon would change the approach. Park a serviceable car facing an exit rather than nose-first against a wall. Scout entrances, sentries, phones, and reinforcement routes. Whistling and silent takedowns can thin isolated guards, while loud weapons are better saved for spaces where the alarm is already raised or concealment offers little value.
After the job, collect the cash you deliberately came for, leave the area, and bank a meaningful carry. Return to the objectives menu to confirm that the damage number changed. That final check prevents repeating an activity that already counted and reveals whether a different target is now required.
Treat district assignments as campaign choices
Vito Scaletta, Cassandra, and Thomas Burke each provide associates and progression benefits as their operation grows. Assigning rackets and districts is therefore not just a story-flavor choice. It changes earn, unlocks favors, and influences how satisfied an underboss remains. A player chasing a particular perk may favor one distribution; a player protecting every alliance should plan a more deliberate balance.
There is no universally correct assignment order. The useful question is what you value and what you have already promised through prior racket decisions. Before a sitdown, note who controls the district’s two rackets, inspect the visible reward, and make a save if you want a recoverable decision point. Our Districts coverage emphasizes consequences rather than declaring a fictional “best ending” route for everyone.
Use the Definitive Edition content deliberately
The Steam Definitive Edition entitlement includes the three story expansions: Faster, Baby!, Stones Unturned, and Sign of the Times, along with bonus packs listed on the store. Owning the package does not mean every expansion begins from the first menu. DLC missions become available through campaign progression and their own contacts or map prompts.
Each expansion changes the texture of play. Faster, Baby! centers on Sinclair Parish and aggressive driving; Stones Unturned reunites Lincoln with John Donovan for a military threat; Sign of the Times investigates a cult and later connects to restoring Sammy’s bar. Entering them between base-game districts can vary the pacing, but a first-time player should keep a manual save and finish any current objective state before switching threads.
Keep collectibles and achievements in perspective
Collectibles are optional knowledge and completion targets, not a requirement for dismantling rackets. Wiretapping is the best in-game discovery aid, and a district-by-district checklist prevents the familiar problem of ending with one unidentified item. Record the type and district when you collect something; a single undifferentiated total is difficult to audit later.
Achievements deserve an equally cautious workflow. Some are story-linked, some reward cumulative behavior, and some depend on choices or DLC. The October 8, 2026 Steam update explicitly included fixes for achievement tracking as well as mission progression. That makes the current build materially different from older forum reports, but it does not justify promising that every historical save will retroactively unlock every condition. Back up the save, verify the build, and reproduce one simple condition before starting a long replay.
Technical checks before blaming the save
Steam lists controller support, cloud saves, achievements, and a Playable Steam Deck rating for AppID 360430. “Playable” is not the same as a locked performance guarantee. Launcher behavior, Proton version, power profile, frame-rate cap, and the game’s graphics settings can all affect the result. The Tech section separates current official support signals from community observations that may age.
On Windows, verify the game files before deleting preferences. Disable overlays one at a time when diagnosing a crash. On Deck, begin with the default compatibility choice, confirm the launcher completes, and change only one variable per test. A reproducible baseline is more valuable than a pile of copied launch options whose purpose is unknown.
A spoiler-light order for using this wiki
- Read the beginner guide through its first-district checklist.
- Consult the mission list only when you cannot tell which objective advances the story.
- Review district assignment consequences immediately before a sitdown.
- Use collectible pages after wiretapping a district, not before exploring it at all.
- Compare weapons by encounter job and ammunition economy rather than raw reputation.
- Start a DLC walkthrough only after its campaign prompt appears in your own save.
- Check the Updates hub before applying old troubleshooting advice.
That order preserves discovery while placing help at the decisions that are costly to undo. Mafia III rewards preparation, but it does not require turning New Bordeaux into a spreadsheet before the first drive.
