Most players need roughly 22 to 30 hours to finish Mafia III’s main revenge story, but that number moves sharply with driving, stealth, district cleanup, and side missions. A run that includes the three story expansions usually lands around 35 to 50 hours. Clearing optional systems, collectibles, and all 85 Steam achievements can push the total beyond 60 hours, with achievement-tracking or a second choice-based run adding more.
Those are planning ranges, not a timer attached to the save. Mafia III makes district racket work part of campaign progression, so even a story-focused player cannot simply select one linear mission after another. Travel, scouting, and the way you dismantle each racket are part of the length.
Choose the estimate that matches your goal
Story-focused: 22–30 hours
Complete required racket damage, district takeovers, and the main Marcano targets. Skip most favors, collectibles, races, and optional exploration.
Story plus useful extras: 30–45 hours
Add underboss favors, selected junction boxes, vehicle upgrades, and the optional missions that support your preferred play style.
All story DLC: add 8–15 hours
Faster, Baby!, Stones Unturned, and Sign of the Times are compact campaigns, but Herbalism and Sammy's renovation can extend them substantially.
Achievement route: 55–75+ hours
Plan for opposing racket-boss and underboss choices, cumulative actions, three DLC lists, and possible replay time on the current Steam build.
Published player-time services disagree because they measure different samples. HowLongToBeat-style summaries commonly place a focused story near the low twenties and a completionist run around the low fifties, while achievement walkthroughs budget closer to 50–60 hours and often require two routes. Use the bands above to reserve time, then adjust after your first two districts.
Why the campaign can feel longer than the mission count
The campaign alternates bespoke story chapters with a repeatable takeover loop. You meet a contact, identify two rackets, reduce each racket’s earn, confront its boss, eliminate the district lieutenant, and assign the territory. A cautious player who wiretaps sectors and removes enemies silently spends longer at each stage than someone who drives straight to high-value damage targets.
New Bordeaux also has no conventional instant fast-travel network. Vehicle delivery saves the trip to a garage, but you still drive to objectives. Missing a turn, crossing the bay, or returning to an underboss adds minutes that accumulate across the campaign.
Cutscenes are a major part of the experience. Skipping them can reduce the clock, but the documentary framing and character testimony carry much of the story. A first playthrough estimate should include them rather than use a speedrun as a realistic baseline.
Budget the DLC separately
Faster, Baby! takes Lincoln to Sinclair Parish and unlocks the Herbalism activity after its story. The narrative portion is short; developing strains, improving the grow house, and waiting for crops can take far longer than the missions themselves.
Stones Unturned is the most action-focused expansion, pairing Lincoln with John Donovan against Connor Aldridge. Its main path is direct, though optional bounty work and equipment experimentation add time.
Sign of the Times follows the Ensanglante investigation and later opens Sammy’s renovation. The investigation is a distinct story arc. Buying every bar upgrade requires both money and two renovation side missions, so do not treat that completion as part of the short campaign estimate.
Definitive Edition includes these story expansions on Windows Steam. They are separate arcs rather than mandatory steps before the base-game ending, which means you can spread them between district chapters instead of playing all three after the credits.
Shorten the run without breaking progression
Wiretap only the sectors that cover an active racket boss, a collectible sweep you actually want, or a route with several objectives. Read the required damage value in the journal and prioritize high-value marked targets instead of clearing every hostile site.
Keep a dependable car in the delivery menu, deposit carried cash before difficult missions, and restock through associates. These small habits reduce failed drives and repeated assaults. If a mission marker does not advance, check the journal and current damage requirement before roaming the entire district.
For a story-first run, finish trafficking or favor missions only when their rewards matter to your build or underboss plan. They enrich characters and raise racket earn, but most are not required to reach Sal Marcano.
Plan a completion run before the first sit-down
The 85 Steam achievements include mutually opposed behavior, notably recruiting versus killing racket bosses and keeping all underbosses loyal versus favoring one. A clean two-route plan is more dependable than trying to improvise every condition near the finale.
Collectibles add travel but are easier after junction boxes reveal their icons. Sweep them by district while nearby rather than saving every item for a citywide cleanup. The six collectible families do not all connect to achievements, so decide whether your goal is an in-game collection or the Steam list.
The October 8, 2026 Steam update specifically improved achievement tracking. Old guides that demand one uninterrupted session describe historical behavior and should not be your first method now. Update, keep manual backups, and perform fresh qualifying actions before deciding a full restart is necessary.
A practical schedule
For a one-week story run, reserve four or five sessions of four to six hours. Stop after a district assignment or a major target; those are natural points to review underboss balance and the next route.
For a broader Definitive Edition playthrough, alternate a base-game district with a DLC chapter or an optional chain. That prevents the racket structure from dominating every session and lets Herbalism mature while you do other work.
If you are chasing 100%, preserve milestone saves before major sit-downs, the final church choice, and DLC spending. A second run becomes much shorter when it has one clear decision goal instead of repeating every collectible and optional activity.
